Sailing on the Lean

Sailing and Customizing a boat for Disabilities

The Starting Point

So I think it would be best to start with the situation at present. I had dengue fever while living in Angola back in 2013. The infection set off an inflammatory response which has slowly eroded most systems of the body with an onset of neurological difficulties starting 2 years ago. The neurological issues at present that cause modification are, generalized weakness that reduces my endurance and ability to do strenuous exercises, loss of balance the creates a risk of falls and vision difficulties that are related to fatigue. As I have no definitive diagnosis at the present time I am basing what I am modifying based on the current issues.

The first Ta Fixe is a 1982 Passport 40, designed by Bob Perry. This boat is is a great template for some of the modifications that will need changing. The set up had great hand holds and places to brace yourself in weather. The stairs were wide and had the perfect pitch to them. The galley secure. Navigating around the inside of the boat was made easier with places to brace and plenty of hand holds. I hope to bring some of the elements of that boat over to the new one. There were a few things that didnt work for me and I will get into those too. This boat is currently for sale. We have moved across country and are not able to maintain 2 boats. I am hoping she goes to a good home.

The second Ta Fixe is a beast of a completely different nature. She is a custom 66 foot aluminum ketch. She was built and fitted by a lovely gentleman named Russel. He did an amazing job at both though in order to be safe for me to use doing long term cruising there are some changes that need to be made.

I am new to this blog thing and have not figured out pictures yet. I hope to get that nailed down by the next post.
